The basics

What a domain name is — and why it matters

A domain name is the address people type to find your website, such as hostwoody.uk. Behind the scenes, the Domain Name System (DNS) translates that name into the IP address of the server hosting your site and tells email where to go.

Registering a domain is really a renewable licence: you register it for one or more years and renew it to keep it. A clear, memorable domain makes you easier to find, recommend and trust, and it gives you professional email addresses that match your brand.

Choosing well

Tips for choosing a domain name

Keep it short and easy to say

Word of mouth still matters. If you have to spell it out, make it brief.

Match your audience

A .co.uk or .uk extension signals a UK business; .com works well for international audiences.

Avoid confusion

Search for similar names first to avoid confusing customers or trademark problems.

Protect key variations

Consider registering common alternatives, such as both .co.uk and .com, to stop others using them.

Transfers

How to transfer a domain to Hostwoody

  1. 1

    For .uk domains

Ask your current registrar to change the domain’s IPS tag to the tag shown in your Hostwoody control panel. .uk transfers complete almost instantly.

  2. 2

For .com and most other domains

Unlock the domain and request its authorisation (EPP) code from your current registrar.

  3. 3

    Start the transfer

Enter the domain and code in the control panel, approve the email sent to the domain’s admin contact, and the transfer completes within about 5–7 days.

  4. 4

    Keep everything live

Your website and email keep working throughout, as long as the nameservers stay the same.
